Eliche Radice was founded at the beginning of the last century (in 1919) and the company is still owned today by the Radice family. The company structure in Italy is developed over 50,000 m², of which 15,000 m² is covered, and is made up of around 85 employees. The range of products which Eliche Radice is able to provide includes not only the propellers, but also the different components of the whole propulsion system starting from the gearbox coupling flange to the rudder. Traction or propulsive FPP, for manoeuvring systems, blades and hubs for CCP propellers, propeller shafts and relative brackets, seals, fixed or directional nozzles, hydro lubricated bearings and rudders.

The use of face seals allows us to resolve the typical problems in which, over time, the installation of the traditional stuffing box incurs, that is wear on the shaft, wet bilge and continuous tightening of the packing, etc.

  • Schematically, the face seal is made up of two parts: one that is stationary and one that rotates. The stationary part is generally fixed to the packing box; the rotating part is fixed to the shaft and turns with it. Thus there is no wear on the shaft: in fact the true seal is found perpendicular to the shaft in two micro lapped surfaces that rub against one another. The elastic bellows or springs recuperate eventual surface wear, thus the constant tightening of the packing is not required. Moreover, the presence of bellows and/or springs, in addition to recuperating wear, serves to compensate eventual misalignment, absorbing vibrations or sudden shifts of the shaft.
  • A new generation of TFTB Axial Seal for lubricated shaft lines in sea water has been introduced by Eliche Radice. The TFTB Axial Seals are easy to fit and they guarantee an excellent hold even in the presence of shallow, sandy waters. The range covers a shaft line of 50mm up to 105mm diameter.

The TFTB works due to the contact between the flat surface of the stationary fixed part composed of graphite carbide and a stainless steel 316L rotating ring that is fixed onto the propeller shaft. The rubber body of the seal is fixed mechanically onto the bronze stuffing box head complete with a bushing made from hydro-lubricated rubber, in order to guarantee a perfect locking and render any unscrewing impossible.

    Advantages

    • Scratches, corrosions and overheating of shaft lines due to the stuffing box packing are eliminated.
    • Easy to fit and substitute.
    • Dry bilge.
    • lubricated with a sea water.
    • The elastometric 'CR' rubber body is self-extinguishing and resistant to heat.
    • The rotating ring and the stationary fixed part have a symmetrical shape and they allow the use of any contact surfaces, so having a double life span.
    • They absorb the vibrations and the misalignments of the shaft.
    • Reduced encumbrance dimensions.
    • Long intervals between maintenance operations.
    • Almost no maintenance and low costs.
  • The RMTA and RMTO are special and innovative products, produced to replace the traditional packing. The self extinguishing rubber used to produce the RMTA has an elasto-metric base and it is a low-friction one which has also special characteristics of being oil resistant and suitable for temperature from -10° to +80°. Both type of seals are suitable for speed up to 30 knots.

The seals RMTA and RMTO are of reduced dimensions, easily assembled and come complete with stainless steel clamps and to a dispenser of sea water-resistant silicone based grease, which reduces friction and keeps down the temperature produced by the propeller shaft rotation.

    Advantages

    • entrance point for the lubrificant grease, including a special closing cap, in order to help the insert on the seal.
    • separate attachment for the water entrance in order to grant the necessary hydro-lubrification of the shaft and the possibility to mount the seal above or under floating water.
