Eliche Radice was founded at the beginning of the last century (in 1919) and the company is still owned today by the Radice family. The company structure in Italy is developed over 50,000 m², of which 15,000 m² is covered, and is made up of around 85 employees. The range of products which Eliche Radice is able to provide includes not only the propellers, but also the different components of the whole propulsion system starting from the gearbox coupling flange to the rudder. Traction or propulsive FPP, for manoeuvring systems, blades and hubs for CCP propellers, propeller shafts and relative brackets, seals, fixed or directional nozzles, hydro lubricated bearings and rudders.

For the monoblock propellers the maximum diameter is 4 metres or 4 tons of weight, while for the propeller shafts the maximum length is 12 meters with 250 mms diameter. Standard products are normally available from stock while others are exclusively planned according to the customer’s specifications.

Eliche Radice designs, manufactures and suppliers folding blade propellers made by OTMAN alloy in 2 blade arrangement. Available in both right and left hand rotation there is a wide range of different diameters and pitches accordingly.

  • It is well known fact that folding blades propellers are used on sailing hulls to reduce the propeller drag during sailing (propeller drag is reduced about 90% compared to the traditional two fixed blades propeller).

    Folding blade propellers are automatically operating by the centrifugal force which is applied on the blades and is gradually increased according to the engine revolution. In forward gear folding blade propellers are equally performed as the fixed-blades propellers.

    Even at low revolutions the centrifugal force is enough to open the blades. When the engine is off, a forward speed of 1 to 2 knots generates sufficient water pressure for the blades to close.

    Reverse gear has always been the main problem for folding blades propellers.

    Mainly due to the water pressure acting in opposite side, the blades open accordingly. 

    In order to avoid this, Eliche Radice has studied and tested special blade sections that allow the blades to remain fully open during reverse operation with positive manoeuvring results.

  • The folding propellers are:

    • Made in series in a wide range of right hand and left hand rotation that will suit any hull and engine.
    • Manufactured with accuracy and dynamically balanced. 
    • Eliminate any vibration and noise.
    • Mounted with blades coupling by means of gears that ensure a balanced opening and perfect closing during sailing.
    • Working tollerance: ISO 484 - class 1°.
    • OTMAN alloy mechanical resistance= R 535 N/mm.2
    • OTMAN alloy yelding= S 220 N/mm.2
    • OTMAN alloy elongation= A5 25%
